“Form And Void”: Kathleen Hurley Liao’S Abstracts at Plainsboro Library Gallery

Plainsboro Public Library – April  2018 –This April, the Plainsboro Library Gallery presents “Form and Void”, a collection of abstracts by Kathleen Hurley Liao. The works are mixed media which combine collage, painting, and monotypes. Each piece is a discovery process, as the artist extracts forms in the abstract images with the objective to “uncover that which is already inherent in the piece”. Housecoat began with the intention of creating an entirely abstract painting but in the negative space the artist saw a figure, and with layers of paint and collage, the image of the lone woman began to emerge. In Hide, Then Seek, the image does seem to be trying to hide itself – Liao says “perhaps to meditate? Or perhaps to seek an answer or a new state of being.”  At the art reception, Sunday, April 8, 2 – 4 pm, the artist can answer these questions and will also be available to describe her use of the various mediums and her creative process. The exhibit runs March 31 – April 25.

A resident of West Windsor, Liao graduated with B.A. in Anthropology from Barnard College, Columbia University. Liao found that her exposure to the art of many cultures provided inspiration for her own work. Music has been another source of inspiration. The harmonies, dissonances, and resolutions of music, particularly those found in jazz, fuel her creativity. The artist explains that her mixed media pieces “express sensations of consciousness and movement through line, color, and composition.”

Liao’s artwork has been awarded the West Windsor Arts Council Award for Outstanding West Windsor Artist at the Mercer County Artist 2015 exhibit; and Best in Show, Printmaking, at the Trenton City Museum’s Ellarslie Open XXXI 2014 and Ellarslie Open XXX 2013. Her artwork may be found in private collections in New York City, Miami, Princeton, Washington D.C., and Santiago Chile.
